APTA released a note informing beekeepers that Aethina tumida, Small hive beetle, has been detected in Brazil. The note asks beekeepers to watch their beehives to detect the beetles’ presence.
This beetle infests beehives, feeding on the bees’ resources (pollen and honey) and brood. Its presence can cause honey fermentation, destruction of honeycombs, instability of the colony and in advanced cases the death of the colony.
