The Collection of the Laboratory of Studies on Bees (LEACOL-UFMA) is a local collection that also has species donated by other institutions in Brazil. With approximately 25,000 specimens, distributed in 202 species, among which 111 species identified by specialists. About 80% of the specimens deposited in the LEACOL Collection come from the various works developed in the various Ecosystems present in Maranhão. Currently the only collection registered as a Faithful Depository Collection by CGEN/MMA. Due to the close relationship between bees and plants, it has been linked to LEACOL, a collection of pollen plates (Pollen Collection). The Pollen Collection is of extreme importance for ecological studies and conservation of bees. The objectives of this project are: a) To qualify and maintain the collection of Bees of the UFMA (LEACOL) and its associated infrastructure, providing necessary conditions for the full operation of the same, in order to optimize its use as a source of primary deposit of the information on the biodiversity of bees in the State of Maranhão; b) Promote the training and qualification of human resources through support for graduate and postgraduate projects in systematics and ecology; c) To expand the taxonomic and ecological knowledge of Apoidea in the State of Maranhão, promoting rapid structured inventories of fauna and flora in areas of special taxonomic, biogeographical and conservationist interest of the State; and d) Ensure the continuation of computerization and dissemination of the collection of the Collection, making the database available online and thus contributing to the creation of the NETWORK CBIOMA (Network of Biological Collections of the State of Maranhão).
