In the Division of Vascular Plants, scientific research is developed on the diversity, distribution and evolution of vascular plants, mainly from South America, with a multidisciplinary approach of the natural sciences. Vascular plants include ferns and lycophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms (flowering plants). Neotropical native plants and species introduced in South America from different parts of the world are studied. The studies include the field work with the observation of the plants in their habitat, and the study in laboratories from samples of plants grown in the greenhouse. The plants collected in the field are deposited and conserved in the BA herbarium to be later studied by researchers.

Research Subjects:
The investigations include floristic and systematic studies, taxonomy, morphology, palynology, reproductive processes, geographic distribution and distribution models of species, and genetic diversity, phylogeny and phylogeography based on DNA. Currently the Division is working mainly on ferns (native and introduced) and flowering plants of the botanical family Asteraceae (thistles, daisies, stevia, artichoke).
